Lessons learnt from daily blogging for the #30DaysOfBeautyChallenge

I was tagged to do the #30DaysOfBeautyChallenge and I thought sure, let’s go for it. I started out by uploading daily Instagram photos but on Day 3 I decided that I should start blogging with this as well. So I wrote blog posts for the first three days then continued to post Instagram photos and related blog posts daily for the rest of the 30 days.

I had set up this website and this blog and decided that the #30DaysOfBeautyChallenge is an excellent way of getting me started with my blog. I wanted to share my thoughts on topics and products and also see whether regular blogging is something I can do.

First off, I set off with not being too hard on myself. I set off with knowing that these will not be the perfect blog posts but they will be my thoughts on a web page with some relevant photo. Some days in the challenge got me thinking that I don’t have much to say about a particular topic, but once I started putting words down into a post, my thoughts and words seemed to flow out. If I wasn’t prompted by this challenge, I wouldn’t have thought of writing posts about certain topics.

Let’s face it. Life does get in the way. I have a full time job that can be quite calm or quite busy. My work time sometimes does overflow into my personal time and this makes it hard to make time to write a blog post on some days.

During one week of this challenge, my boyfriend’s parents were visiting. We were spending most days with them, showing them around the city and I didn’t want to miss out or be anti social. So before they turned up, I prepared a few blog posts in advance. This was challenging, more so because I wanted to finish off my work in advance as well so I can spend time with my guests. Towards the end of their stay, there was a day when we randomly decided to make a trip to Oxford and Stonehenge. The problem was that I didn’t have any blog posts pre written for that day. So of course, me being my stubborn self, refusing to miss a day, I wrote a blog post on my phone in the car. Luckily I had some internet connection and I also managed to publish it. Cool.

Other days, I spend a whole day at work and then my partner meets me in town and we go out for dinner. My partner wants to enjoy my company, I want to do my blog posts, so I chill and relax over dinner as usual, then when I’m back home and before I go to sleep, I write and publish a blog post. Again, I wasn’t aiming for perfection, I was simply getting myself to do it.

I’ve learnt a few things from this process:

1. I have more to share than I thought I did

2. Having a set plan with writing prompts is very useful

3. It gets easier and quicker over time… And I can get better at it by doing it regularly

4. There are certainly circumstances where there’s a good reason not to post. There are a lot of days when refusing to not do it will help you find a way to do it — And that’s rewarding

5. On quite a small scale of success (come on, it’s a 30 day challenge), deciding to finish before starting is a good way of finishing. This has applied to more challenging things I’ve done in my life and sticking to my guns is what got me through the days when I simply didn’t want to do it.

In the end it’s been fun and rewarding. Now I know I can blog regularly…. If I want to. 🙂

Makeup Collection – Day 30 of the 30 Days of Beauty Challenge

Woo! It’s day 30 of the 30 days of beauty challenge and I made it till the end without missing a day. It wasn’t an easy challenge and I’ll possibly be following this post with a post about my experience with this challenge.

For today, the prompt is “Makeup Collection”. As you’ve probably noticed, I don’t always take these prompts literally. I take them as a prompt to write something — which is what I imagine that the point of a writing challenge is about. My makeup collection is spread across Malta and the UK and in the UK, some of my collection is packed away in storage and some is what I use daily. I won’t be showing you all the makeup I own, since in my current situation that’s quite difficult to do but I will be sharing with you a website that I’m using where I’m hoping to store details of all my makeup items (I’m building it slowly, over time).

I recently watched a video by Michelle from Ready Set Glamour and she mentioned this website herself, it’s called snupps. The idea is that you can easily take pictures of your items and organise them in shelves. You can look at and search through your shelves and you can set them to either be private or public. You can also search through other people’s shelves, and you can have a look at my shelves here: I can’t promise to keep building this and keep it up to date, but it seems like an interesting idea. I’m including a screenshot of my lipsticks shelf. I’d love to get round to taking nice photos of swatches of all my lip colours, but for now most of my photos are of me holding the lipstick in my hand.
Screen Shot 2015-07-11 at 19.11.27From my brief experience with the phone app, it was relatively easy to add several photos of items in a shelf and add a description of each. I like that I can search through my items. I also noticed that I was able to add items from the website using my computer. There are quite a lot of details that you’re able to fill in about the item but it seems like you can fill in as little and as much detail as you’d like and the website is still useful. I haven’t had enough experience with it to determine whether this is something I want to use regularly or not. All I can say so far is that it sounds like an interesting idea.

So if you’d like to keep up to date with my makeup collection, follow me on snupps! 🙂

How to save yourself from tangled hair – The Tangle Teezer – Day 29 of the 30 Days of Beauty Challenge

Tangle Teezer

For day 29 of the 30 days of beauty challenge the topic is Hair Tools. The tangle teezer is essentially the only item that can be classified as a hair tool that I use on my hair these days.

I’ve stopped heat styling my hair since last November and I simply let it air dry with some product in it. I’ve been enjoying my natural curls lately and they look best when my hair is in the best condition possible. That said, it is also important for me to have a brush that detangles my crazy curls without damaging my hair and this tangle teezer is the only brush that does the job.

I’ve tried a couple of other brushes that are supposedly meant for detangling hair but for some reason, none work in the same way as this one. I’m very careful with detangling my hair. With any brush, I never start combing my hair from root to end because that way I simply end up with a bunch of knots at the bottom, making it more difficult to detangle without damage. I start by combing the ends and making sure that there aren’t any knots there, then I start slowly working my way up. It doesn’t take as much time as it sounds. Since my hair is healthier, it’s been more silky and the brush seems to go through without much effort. Back when my hair was more damaged and more difficult to comb through, this brush had a significant impact on my styling time and ease of detangling.

This brush is more costly than average brushes but I sincerely think that it’s worth the money. In my experience, I wasted much more money on cheaper brushes that I had to stop using and it would have cost less to simply buy this one right off the bat. And of course, since it’s not breaking my hair it also reduces my expenses on hair repair and/or frizz fighting products. For my type of hair, owning a brush like this is necessary and saves time, money, damage and frustration.

Lip Care – Day 28 of the 30 Days of Beauty Challenge

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Balm and Etre Belle Liplift Peel

Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Balm and Etre Belle Liplift Peel

For lip care I exclusively use these two products. My lips get dry very easily and in  winter they’re a nightmare. I’ve owned a truck load of lip balms and most seem to do nothing to my lips other than sit there making my lips feel sticky or greasy. Some even seem to make my lips worse than they were.

The only lip balm that’s ever worked on me is this Neutrogena Norwegian Formula lip balm with SPF 20. It moisturises and protects my lips. When my lips are dry in the evening, if I apply this before going to sleep, I wake up with my lips well moisturised.

In winter, my lips tend to get flaky. This is a chronic problem for me and sometimes, no matter how much moisture I attempt to put on them, I still get flaky lips. Especially since I live in the UK — winters are cold and I walk to work in cold wind, rain and snow.

Until less than a year ago, my remedy for treating flaky lips has been applying vaseline to my lips and scrubbing with either a toothbrush or a damp face cloth. Another alternative was using a sugar scrub, possibly mixed with vaseline and scrubbing off the flaky skin in that way. The problem I find with both of these methods is that sometimes, when the flaky skin comes off it peels some healthy skin with it. Painful and unattractive.

The Etre Belle Liplift peel is a very gentle chemical peel that softens the flaky skin and detaches it from the healthy skin. I apply it generously over the areas on my lips where they need it and after a minute, I wipe it off with a wet face cloth. No harsh physical scrubbing.

A few months ago I published a video on my youtube channel with a demo of how the Etre Belle Liplift peel works. You can check it out here.

A few things to keep in mind with this product are that since it’s a chemical peel, ensure that you rinse this off thoroughly with warm water. It’s also good to apply some lip balm after to keep the new skin (or the skin that was under the flaky skin) moisturised. This product has sincerely changed my life. No more flaky lips for me!

What are your favourite lip care products?

Beauty products in my Handbag – Day 27 of the 30 Days of Beauty Challenge

So um… Yeah… This is what I have in the beauty bag that resides in my handbag today. Can you tell that I like lipsticks? I essentially store my favourite work appropriate lipsticks in my handbag. I apply lipstick before leaving the house by taking my pick from here.

I’ll briefly go through each of the items in my beauty bag according to their numbered sections.

1. Sanitizing hand gels
Gel de manos con alcohol from Deliplus — A very watery consistency but evaporates quickly and doesn’t leave a tacky feel.
Care Complete Aloe Vera Refreshing Hand Gel — A thick gel with a nice light scent that also evaporates quickly and doesn’t leave a tacky feel.

2. My Summer Remedies
DHC Oil blotting paper (100 pack) — These come in a cute packaging and do the job. I blot my face before applying powder.
Physician’s Formula Mineral Airbrushing pressed powder SPF 30 — I heavily apply this for SPF and top it up every few hours to keep my face protected. It’s translucent and does the job. It comes with a mirror and a tiny brush.
MonuSpa Rosewood Reviving Mist — I got this in a Glossybox and I spray my face after applying the powder to not look powdery. I like that this is a sample size.

3. Blister prevention and Care
Compeed Blister plasters — I discovered these recently and they’ve changed my life. I’ll probably write a full post about them soon because they’re that good. They keep blisters well protected and they heal faster. I recently started carrying these around with me just in case.
Boots Anti-Blister stick — This is a stick that you rub on your skin in places where you think that your shoes might rub. It’s also there just in case haha.

4. A small Roger & Gallet Fleur de Figuier perfume

5. A compact mirror from Pylones, a shop that I have an obsession with.

6. Some lip products (left to right)
Chanel Rouge Allure Velvet No. 34 La Raffinée — Sophisticated packaging and a my lips but better colour
Mac Bare Again — A glossy nude
Mac Brave — Another my lips but better colour
NYX Tea Rose — A very wearable pink shade
Infinita Deliplus No. 5 — A long wearing, matte raspberry shade.

7. More lip products (left to right)
❣ Sephora Cream Lip Stains in Peach Tarte, Marvellous Mauve and Pink Souffle. I adore these and I might swatch all my Sephora Cream Lip Stains soon.
Revlon Colorstay Balm Stain in  Honey Douce
Too Faced Melted Lipstick in Melted Peony — A great everyday colour and applies really nicely. These Too Faced Melted lipsticks are my favourite long-wearing glosses. I’m very impressed with them since when they wear (and after eating) they remain vibrant and glossy but they don’t feel sticky on the lips. I never knew such products existed.

8. Pencil Products
NYX 831 Mauve Lip Pencil
Essence Lip Pencils in 15 Honey Berry and 14 Femme — I purchase almost the whole range of the Essence lip pencils recently and I’m in love with them. They’re amazing.
❣ Mac Feline eye pencil

If you want to check out what else I carry around with me check out my youtube video below:

So, I might need to purge my beauty bag from lipsticks. But um… I need them all!
