I used these products for five months, they’re all done and through and now it’s time for a review!
These are the Neutrogena rapid wrinkle repair Night, Day and Serum products. I’m going to start off with saying that I don’t have wrinkles on my face (just a couple of fine lines) but I use these to slow down my skin’s ageing. As far as I know, products can only temporarily plump up the skin to make wrinkles look less pronounced but they can’t fix wrinkles. So that’s my first point, the name of this line is misleading since the ingredients will not repair anyone’s wrinkles but the hyaluronic acid does give that plumping effect temporarily.
This product line is a retinol and hyaluronic acid treatment. Retinol is the whole Vitamin A molecule and it is clinically proven to slow down the ageing process (it won’t repair wrinkles but helps slow down their development) since it’s a very strong antioxidant. Hyaluronic acid works very well at plumping up the skin.
For retinol to be preserved properly and for it to work, it needs to be stored in packaging that protects it from sunlight and that’s airtight. This range comes in dark packaging that’s good for preserving the retinol and they’re all dispensed with pumps. This is certainly better than a jar packaging but retinol would be more effective if it comes in dark single use capsules.
With retinol, it’s very important to wear sunscreen because it makes the skin more prone to sun damage (which is very counter productive if you’re trying to slow down the ageing process). The day cream from this line is an SPF30 that wears very nicely under makeup.
Every night, I applied the serum and the night cream every and during the day I applied the day cream under makeup. The serum and night cream shouldn’t be used on the thin skin around the eyes and on the lips. Some people are allergic to retinol and their skin cannot tolerate it. I’m not allergic but in the beginning, I applied a little too close to my eyes and noticed that (only around my eyes), my skin started to get a little flakey. This is a normal reaction with retinol products, my skin wasn’t used to it and this product is too strong for the skin around the eyes. Neutrogena has an eye cream in this line but I never tried it. By time, I didn’t notice any more flakey skin.
After a couple of weeks of use, I noticed that my skin was feeling much softer, looked plumper (because of the hyaluronic acid) and it was smoother. Pimples became less frequent and when I did get a pimple, it healed quicker.
Although I used the day cream under my makeup, since I was wearing this in the Maltese summer, I used a mineral powder with SPF50 on my face on top of my makeup and topped up it up before going out in the sun at any time in the day. Simply wearing SPF30 in the morning under makeup isn’t sufficient for protecting skin all day. The day cream is nice for the hyaluronic acid, but it’s not very functional for me as a sunscreen.
This is a product I recommend if 1) you’re not allergic to retinol 2) you’re not expecting your wrinkles to be magically repaired and 3) if you want to start out with using retinol products. The price is fantastic for the (realistic) effectiveness of the products and the packaging is suitable for preserving the retinol. The hyaluronic acid in this line is sufficient to plump up the skin, my fine lines are less defined when I used it.
